Three More Perish in Rain-related Accidents (15 December 2009)

Three more people died in flood related accidents in the country during the wet weather, bringing the total to 11, according to police reports on Monday.

A driver and passenger died instantly when they crashed into a lamp post in Umm Al Quwain, tearing the car into three parts.

Two men, both Yemeni, were involved in an accident on King Faisal Road at noon on Sunday. The bodies were taken to Umm Al Quwain hospital. Major Saeed Ibrahim Al Bairag, director of traffic at the City Centre in Umm Al Quwain, said the car was speeding.

He said the driver had not been driving carefully in the rainy weather and lost control of the car. It skidded and hit the median strip, flipped and hit the post and broke into three parts on impact.

In Al Ain, a 21-year-old Emirati was killed on the spot when the car he was driving veered off the road, crashed into the embankment and two trees in Naima, according to a police statement.

Preliminary police investigations showed the man hit a water pond in a middle lane and skidded to the extreme right of the road before crashing into the embankment.

The police statement did not specify when the accident happened.

The Dubai Police Operation Room received 9,943 calls and reported 987 traffic accidents in Dubai during the continuous downpours.

Among the reported accidents, 41 were serious and many cars were damaged due to speeding and not maintaining a safe distance in low visibility.

Meanwhile, tankers have been pressed into service to drain the water off the road.

Ahmed Al Muhairi, director of the Transport Section of Ajman Municipality and Planning Directorate (AMPD), said the emergency section of the department has prepared an operation plan to face emergencies.

“Two hundred water pumps and 20 tankers were dispatched in Ajman,” Al Muhairi said.

“Huge amounts of rain water filled various areas in Ajman such as Al Jarf, Mushiaraf, Al Hameedeya, Al Rashedeya, Al Nuamia, Al Nakheel, Al Bustan, Al Helew and Al Sawan. We succeeded in making the roads
usable again.”
