Minister Of Climate Change And Environment Tours Umm Al Quwain Fishing Harbor (15 September 2019)

Visit is part of series of initiatives to support fishing profession, sustain nation’s fisheries

His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, toured the Umm Al Quwain Fishing Harbor, as part of a series of initiatives that underscore the importance of replenishing the fish stock in the UAE's waters and protecting fishing, one of the oldest professions in the region and a key contributor to the UAE national economy today.

During his visit to Umm Al Quwain Fishing Harbor, currently undergoing a refurbishment that involves modifying and deepening the entrance to the port and the construction of a new breakwater designed at an appropriate height to prevent waves from entering, Dr Al Zeyoudi gained insights into the fishermen's needs and the challenges faced by those practicing the profession in Umm Al Quwain. The Minister listened to their suggestions for preserving the country's fish stocks and ensuring the sustainability of its fisheries, as well as their requirements to enhance the level of services at the port.

His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi discussed with the fishermen the current threats to the fish stock and the role of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) in boosting fish reserves in local waters through periodically issuing and implementing relevant legislations.

The Minister also praised the fishermen's active contributions to the national economy and noted that MOCCAE continues to assess the fishermen's prevailing conditions to help them overcome any challenges they may face. The Minister urged the fishermen to help preserve vulnerable marine ecosystems and avoid harmful practices, such as dumping waste materials and discarded fishing gear at sea. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of adhering to ministerial decrees and commended the fishermen's contribution to achieving MOCCAE's sustainable development strategy.

For their part, Umm Al Quwain's fishermen conveyed their keenness to abide by the relevant legislations that aim to boost marine sustainability and ensure food security for present and future generations in line with the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021.
